The Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA), the professional society of Anaesthesiologist - physicians of India, is a non-profit voluntary organization that exists for the benefit of it's members and is recognised as the representative body of the specialty by the Medical Council of India (MCI), Government of India, State Governments, Universities of India, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Society was founded in 1947 in Mumbai (Bombay) and now re-registered at Chennai (Regd. No. 8/1999)-(PAN : AAAT13385A).
It has committed itself to improving the Healthcare Standards, Education and Research in Anaesthesia, Pain and Palliative Care, Intensive & Critical Care, Primary Trauma Care and Resuscitation, apart from Perioperative Medicine. Along with Government & NGOs it also caters in providing quality health care in remote and rural areas including maternal and child health care.
The Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists is affiliated to the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), regionally linked to Asian Australasian Society of Anaesthesiologists (AASA); South Asian Confederation of Anaesthesiologists (SACA) and nationally represented through various state and city branches.
The Society is growing and has now established a creditable membership strength of Anaesthesiologists. In infancy the society grew up with the surgical colleagues as a common formation till 1964. To meet the needs of member anaesthesiologists, ISA conducts various programmes, workshops and conference at regional and national levels, publishes literature supplements, the Indian Journal of Anaesthesia, clinical protocols and patient information brochures. The National Annual Conference takes place in different Indian city each year and attracts speakers as well as delegates from India and abroad. The 4 day Annual conference has been constitutionally fixed to take place from 27th to 30th December every year preceded by Continued Medical Education (CME) on 26th December. Over the years, the CME programmes have become very popular besides the scientific programmes like guest lectures, interactive workshops, pros & cons sessions, meet-the-expert.
The state-of-the-art scientific/industrial exhibitions, and the cultural and sight-seeing programmes had added glamour to the Conference.
The silver Jubilee of the formation of the ISA was in 1972 and the Silver Jubilee Conference was conducted in Chennai in 1975.
The Golden Jubilee year was celebrated in New Delhi in 1997.
50th Annual National Conference (Goldcon 2002) was conducted at Coimbatore in 2002.
The Society is governed by the Governing Council chaired by the President and is administered by Honorary Secretary (National), Treasurer along with Vice-President, Editor of IJA, nine Governing Council Members, two immediate past Presidents, immediate past National Secretary and Treasurer. Organising Secretary of the Annual National Conference of the corresponding year is also Ex-Officio member.
Apart from the academic promotion, the Society caters to the welfare of colleagues in the critical times through Family Benifit Scheme and strives for standardization of practice, balanced projection of future professional requirement and establishment of the College of Anaesthesiologists.
The Society provides guidelines to the Government and non-governmental organizations in organizing Anaesthesiology Departments, Critical Care units, Pain Clinics and Primary Trauma Care and Disaster management. The Society also maintains active association with other professional organisations.
